What Kind of Wheelchair Accessories Are There?

Wheelchair accessories are not required, but they do help to make the journey more convenient and perhaps even more fun for the disabled person.  What kind of accessories are currently on the market?  Are they expensive?  Are they safe?

One of the most practical items in wheelchair accessories is that of the backpack.  You can store items and keep them safe from rain or heat.  A saddlebag is used for similar purposes but straps to the wheelchair armrest for easier access.  You can also buy under-the-seat bags in order to store your valuables.

One of the most common complaints about wheelchairs is that clothes get tangled up in the wheels.  With a clothes guard, you can prevent this from happening.  These wheelchair accessories can also prevent debris from getting caught in the wheelchair.  There are also spoke guards (which protect your hands) and wheelchair drink holders.  If you need to take in more water at a faster rate, then look into a drink aid holder.  This clamp hooks onto a drink tube.
If you frequently write, draw, read or use a computer, then a wheelchair tray will be very convenient.  If you are capable of walking on occasion, then buy a cane carrier to take your cane with you wherever you go.  Other wheelchair accessories include gloves to protect you from chaffing or from developing calluses, and superior wheelchair tires.  What can better tires do for you?  You will be able to ride on gravel, sand, carpet and concrete.  Covering your chair and yourself from rain or sun is also a necessity.  Wheelchair umbrellas and covers are the best defense.

Larger wheelchair accessories include an easy travel ramp, a transfer board, and a tri-fold ramp.  Other devices worth noting include a pressure sensitive alarm system, a scooter arm tote, and peddle master portable hand controls.  These objects are replacements for the more complicated hand controls available today.  These wheelchair accessories are user-friendly and have been evaluated for safety by top organizations like the UVA Auto Safety Laboratory.

Never forsake your own comfort.  The fact that you are in a wheelchair means you have to take very good care of your body and protect it against harm, pain and inactivity.  Keep active with these useful wheelchair accessories.  Remember, in addition to the aforementioned items, you can also buy colorful covers, wheels, armrests and drink holders to show some personality and zest.
