Rehab Supplies for Back Pain

Lower back pain can be caused by a number of things, including trauma to the back, disorders such as arthritis, a sports injury, work-related injury, or serious illnesses. If you have been experiencing chronic back pain, it is imperative to schedule an appointment with your doctor. While your back pain may be due to something as simple as poor posture, it is important to rule out serious health conditions. You will then be given the best course of action to follow in order to achieve relief from your back pain.

A variety of rehab supplies may be used to alleviate back pain and to restore back health. To reduce pain and inflammation in the lower back area, a hot or cold compress may be used. In many cases, this gives individuals temporary relief and offers increased mobility for a period of time. Ideally, cold compresses should be used immediately following an injury. Ice packs or other types of compresses should be applied for about 20 minutes and can be used for a few days before hot compresses are used. A hot compress will assist in increasing blood flow to the area and in relaxing back muscles.

While rest is essential if back pain is severe, once a certain degree of recovery is achieved, it is important to strengthen the area using appropriate rehab supplies. Your doctor or physical therapist will be able to recommend gentle exercises that can be accomplished with rehab supplies such as exercise balls. Be sure to discuss your exercise plan with your doctor before proceeding since some exercises may only work to aggravate the back muscles.

In many cases, people with back pain need to wear orthopedic devices that support the back area. This is especially important for individuals who stand up all day at work or are required to lift heavy objects. Many people also develop back pain from sitting improperly at their desk chairs or from standing with incorrect posture. Being more conscious of posture and using back support devices may help to strengthen your back and bring it back to health.

Additional rehab supplies that may be essential for regaining your back health include support pillows. While sleeping, you may be placing unnecessary tension on your back muscles and spine. This can lead to neck, shoulder, and back pain. A combination of proper posture during sleep and during the day along with appropriate exercise techniques will assist you in getting back on track so that you no longer have to live with back pain.

Natural Wellness Meets Physical Therapy Equipment

Health care professionals love to help people. Isn’t that why they pursued a career in which they could see people who are suffering begin to feel better? Physical therapists, chiropractors, massage therapists, and athletic trainers all have one goal in mind; to see their patients recover. Of course, the world of health care and natural wellness has come a long way in recent years. There has been a substantial merge of Eastern and Western medicine in recent times. This has created the ability to get your health care needs taken care of in one place rather than in several different offices. Because of this merging, patients can often receive chiropractic care in the same office as they work with physical therapy equipment.

For natural wellness providers who are looking to bring modern physical therapy equipment into their clinics, they will find it has become easier than ever to locate what they need. The Internet has opened a wide window for products to be easily found. In particular, chiropractor’s offices have become a sort of hub for general health and recovery. Many individuals have found the value of utilizing the treatment and knowledge of their chiropractor as well as using physical therapy equipment at the same time. This is likely due to the heightened awareness of the positive impact that chiropractic care has on athletes.

For many years, athletes have trained and worked with both physical therapists as well as chiropractors. It is more than simple exercise that keeps sports stars at the top of their game. Biofreeze as an Alternative to Ice Packs

Biofreeze is a mild analgesic containing menthol ilex and camphor. It provides pain relief and reduces inflammation by cooling the afflicted area. A drop in temperature reduces blood supply to a particular area and. In turn, the pain receptors cease to function at their full capacity. Common uses for analgesics such as Biofreeze include treating injuries from sports, various strains of the back and extremities, and mitigating the ongoing effects of arthritic symptoms.

Biofreeze works by means of “cryotherapy”, or cold therapy. What distinguishes this product as unique is its ability to administer cryotherapy topically, or by surface contact with the skin with a level of efficacy unparalleled by any products in its class.

Often times, athletes will “ice down” immediately after a work out in order to pre-emptively prevent painful swelling and other side effects that sometimes afflict people after strenuous physical activity. Some specialists even go as far as to advocate ice baths after workouts with this intention in mind.

Strenuous activity produces tiny tears in muscle tissue. These tears are responsible for both muscle pain and muscle growth. Cold temperatures slow down your metabolic rate and reduce swelling. In turn, this actually speeds up the rate at which your injured muscle tissue can heal itself.

While ice is the oldest means for administering cryotherapy, it does have certain disadvantages. If you apply ice to an injury for too long, you risk numbness, pain, irritation of the skin and even nerve damage in extreme cases. Not only that, but using an ice pack requires that you stay stationary while you apply it. All Biofreeze requires is a quick, one-time application, and then you are ready to go again.

In addition to being less dangerous and more portable than ice packs, Biofreeze actually works faster than ice. A study called “Effects of Menthol on Skeletal Muscle Blood Flow,” published 2007 by Brandon Hollis in a journal called Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, shows that menthol-based products can achieve the same effects as ice in approximately a quarter of the same amount of time. Menthol ointments such as Biofreeze cut down blood flow in the afflicted area much more quickly, and almost all of the patients interviewed in the study claimed that the pain reduction effects of menthol-based products like Biofreeze lasted longer than ice after the initial application.

This study was conducted on twelve individuals, both male and female, between the ages of 21 and 32. After the application of both the ice packs and menthol ointments, researchers then monitored blood flow in the area using ultrasound.

Treating Back Pain

There is nothing worse than back pain. This type of pain can affect every aspect of your life and can be debilitating. Bones, muscles and nerves must all be functioning properly to be free of back pain. They must be free to move, in proper alignment, and be healthy. Most people can expect to feel the discomfort of back pain within their lifetime. While back pain is common, only recently have proper methods been put into place to relieve this problem.

Most back pain is caused by either a severe injury, or many small instances that take its toll on the back. The back becomes tender and pain is noticed during certain movements. A natural herbal pain reliever, biofreeze is useful in reducing back pain. In addition, applying ice to the painful area reduces inflammation and therefore lessens pain. Ice is routinely used by physical therapists for this reason.

Active rest is generally the best way to work through back pain. Therapists call this type of rest relative rest. It means doing less than you are accustomed to doing. It does not mean staying in bed until the pain subsides. Total rest is likely to increase the pain in your back.

Once ice and relative rest have been applied, stretching is the next step to lowering back pain. Exercises that lengthen muscles reduce tension on nerve tissues. Stretching and exercising the lower back and support muscle groups is the goal. Once exercise is complete, heat instead of ice is applied to the area. Heat can be in the form of a heat pad, a heated compress or warm bath.

Back treatment also involves strengthening the back muscles. This type of exercise should only be employed once the pain is gone. When pain persists it is important to remain active, at a reduced rate. Strengthening the back muscles lays the foundation to a full recovery. The surrounding support muscles are strengthened to support any force it comes in contact with. The goal is to get back to where you were before you hurt your back, or at least as close as possible.

In conclusion, there is nothing worse than back pain. This type of pain can affect your quality of life. Biofreeze and ice are ideal first remedies that will reduce inflammation and lessen pain. Strengthening exercises should only be introduced after pain has completely subsided. Heat, is then applied to the area stimulating recovery.
