Physical therapy equipment is an important part of recovering from accidents, injuries, surgery, and illness. For the most part, any physical therapy equipment should be operated by a licensed physical therapist, but there are some things you will need to use in your home. This is because the equipment you’ll use is necessary at least once per day, and traveling to the physical therapist’s office so often is out of the question.
Before you use any of the equipment you purchase for your home, you should be sure you understand everything about it. Most of the time, the physical therapy equipment you use will be simple, but there may be some things you need for your home that require instruction, and perhaps even assistance, before you can use it. It’s easy to get excited about your new equipment and want to jump right in, but you could suffer more injuries if you don’t learn how to use it correctly before you begin. If you try to use equipment that requires help from an assistant when you’re on your own, you could find yourself with new injuries and no one around to help you. No matter how excited you are about beginning your home therapy courses, you must be patient and wait for the instruction you need.
The simple physical therapy equipment for your home is often just exercise balls or elastic bands. These are the easiest to use, as you might imagine, but they can cause problems if you use them incorrectly. Even something as simple as the elastic band can bring more injury, especially if you use the wrong tension for your exercise or don’t have your body aligned properly when you begin. You can imagine how important it is to get instruction for the bigger physical therapy equipment if even the elastic bands can cause problems.
Before you buy anything for your home, you should consult with your physician and your physical therapist. Learn what equipment will work best in your home, and then take the time to learn how to use it. Cover the length of exercises, the posture and position of your body as you work, and anything else that may go into the exercises you must do on your own. If you are careless in your recovery, you will only have yourself to blame if you don’t achieve the results you really want and need.
