Using Lancets for Monitoring Diabetes

If you are living with diabetes, you’re not alone.  Millions of people suffer from diabetes and there is no cure.  There are many things you can do to reduce your symptoms and stay healthy.  Keeping a diabetes monitoring kit is essential for regular blood testing.  These kits consist of monitors and lancets.  Lancets are devices that are used to prick the skin in order to get a small blood sample for testing.  It is necessary to test your blood often in order to ensure that you maintain the proper level of blood sugar.

Lancets come in many different styles but they all essentially operate the same way.  A small point is used to prick the skin on the finger or other area.  Some lancets may make small incisions in the skin.  There are different sized gauges that are used to make various sized pricks or incisions.  When choosing a lancet, the higher the gauge number, the smaller incision that will be made.  Those with the highest gauges are usually the easiest to use because they don’t give much pain.

It is possible to live comfortably with diabetes if you learn how to properly monitor your blood glucose.  A lancing device is the most important part of the monitoring process because it is the hardest and most painful.  When choosing a monitor, consider one of the newer models that require less blood for testing.  The process requires you to prick or puncture the skin to get a blood sample.  In many cases, you can use the fingers.

Some diabetes monitors are now able to use blood from other parts of the body, such as the legs.  This makes it easier and less painful to collect blood samples using lancing devices.  With practice, it will only take one try to collect the blood sample needed for testing.  It is important to properly clean the skin first by using an antibacterial product.  Antibacterial swabs are perfect for this use.

Once the area is clean, you can use the lancing device to prick the skin and obtain the blood sample.  The device must be held in place properly in order for it to work correctly.  There is usually some type of spring operation that forces the point quickly into the skin to create a small drop of blood.  Most of these devices have several or more settings that can be used to adjust the tension.  Cleanse the skin again, immediately after completing the test.
